Struggling with a team member?

Many leaders come to us because something feels stuck - in the way their people are showing up.
A team member’s energy has shifted. Communication’s dropped. Expectations aren’t being met. And you’re not sure how to raise it — or what to do next.

Sound like you?

What Might Be Holding You Back

When we unpack these situations, a few themes usually surface:

  • You're unsure of the right words and don't want to make things worse.

  • You’ve been avoiding the conversation and hoping it resolves itself. (it never does)

  • You don’t know where your ability to hold people to account and their ability to take responsiblity starts and ends.

  • You’ve never been shown how to lead people through pressure or change.

  • You fear an emotional reaction, a complaint, or damaging the relationship.

These are normal concerns — especially if your leadership and people management skills have been built on the fly, without really knowing what is the right approach.

Simple Moves That Shift the Energy

Even without a full framework in place, there are things you can do now to gain clarity:

1. Start with a Check-In

Invite your team member to a casual 1:1 and Ask:

  • “How are you finding things lately?”

  • “Is anything unclear in your role?”

  • “Where could I support you better right now?”

These are not performance reviews — they’re alignment tools. Be prepared to listen and reflect. Sometimes the clarity comes just from being present and asking the right questions.

Don’t be afraid to say, ‘somethings not quite right, lets work it through’.

2. Reflect on Your Own Approach

  • Are your expectations clear — or have they shifted without you realising?

  • Do your team members know what success looks like?

  • Where might your silence be creating space for confusion

Leadership often requires recalibration — not perfection.

3. Have a Simple Process

If performance issues are unfolding, it helps to have:

  • A documented conversation Ithis means take some notes and share with your employee)

  • Set clear goals or behaviour changes

  • A follow-up date and agreed plan

This protects you legally — but also helps people feel held, not judged.
